War tears across the human realms, driven by the renegade wizard who would conquer in the name of the old god Esus. Of all the wizards loyal to the true gods, only Ellion may be able to defeat the renegade - and he is bound by a vow of abstinence. Wizards and nobles alike pin their tenuous hopes on Letitia, whose minor arcane talent seems to be the only thing the renegade fears.

As the loyalists battle the men who would overthrow rulers everywhere, and wizards loyal to the true gods try to overmaster powers that aren't supposed to exist, gods old and new bring their own agendas to the mayhem. The outcome of this war will decide more than anyone but the gods - and the renegade - understand.
