Guest post: Honorable Assassins by Gail Z. Martin

Joel "Ridge" Breckenridge and his best friend Garrett "Rett" Kennard are King's Shadows, elite assassins who serve the King of Landria and dispatch threats to the crown with extreme prejudice. Their unconventional rule-breaking style has made them the most successful assassins in the kingdom, earning them the gratitude of King Kristoph and the ire and envy of many of their fellow Shadows.

Sellsword's Oath is the second book in the Assassins of Landria series, my new 'buddy flick' epic fantasy series which serves up all the world building and 'feels' of classic epic fantasy without the epic length. It's perfect for anyone who loves the genre but lacks the time to dive into a thick tome, delivering action, adventure, daring-do and a sizeable amount of snark in a shorter format.

After their big success saving King Kristoph from a plot of Yefim Makary, the shadowy Witch Lord, Ridge and Rett find themselves sent on a seemingly unrelated string of assignments by the Shadow Master. As they delve deeper, they begin to suspect that the problems aren't quite as unrelated as they first thought. Conspiracy, treason, and a new attempt to kill the king and seize the throne mean Ridge and Rett are right in the thick of things once again.

Only this time, they've managed to get on the wrong side of both the priests and the generals, so Ridge and Rett must go rogue, and hope to get to the bottom of the threat before the Witch Lord and his loyalists can strike again. King Kristoph's life and the throne of the kingdom hang in the balance. But can Ridge and Rett elude both their enemies and their colleagues long enough to save the kingdom and clear their names?

If you've read my other epic fantasy series (Chronicles of the Necromancer, Ascendant Kingdoms Saga, Darkhurst), you know that I can spin a yarn. But I kept encountering readers who said that they used to read epic fantasy but stopped because they just didn't have time for 'big fat fantasy'--big books that took longer to read than they had free time to spare.

That led to the Assassins of Landria series, tales that are full of intrigue and 'epicness' but are a bit lighter in tone and a lot shorter in length.

I love the epic fantasy genre, and I appreciate how wonderful it is to mentally 'move in' to a complex world and convoluted plot. But I also know that free time is a precious rarity these days, and so I wanted to offer a fun, exciting option for readers who wanted to make the most of the downtime that they have.

Sellsword's Oath will be coming soon to ebook, paperback and audiobook from Worldbuilders Press and Recorded Books.
