What happens when "happily ever after" has come and gone?
On the eve of her only daughter, Princess Raven's wedding, an aging Snow White finds it impossible to share in the joyous spirit of the occasion. The ceremony itself promises to be the most glamorous social event of the decade. Snow White’s castle has been meticulously scrubbed, polished and opulently decorated for the celebration. It is already nearly bursting with jubilant guests and merry well-wishers. Prince Edel, Raven's fiancé, is a fine man from a neighboring kingdom and Snow White's own domain is prosperous and at peace. Things could not be better, in fact, except for one thing:
The king is dead.
The queen has been in a moribund state of hopeless depression for over a year with no end in sight. It is only when, in a fit of bitter despair, she seeks solitude in the vastness of her own sprawling castle and climbs a long disused and forgotten tower stair that she comes face to face with herself in the very same magic mirror used by her stepmother of old.
It promises her respite in its shimmering depths, but can Snow White trust a device that was so precious to a woman who sought to cause her such irreparable harm? Can she confront the demons of her own difficult past to discover a better future for herself and her family? And finally, can she release her soul-crushing grief and suffocating loneliness to once again discover what "happily ever after" really means?
Only time will tell as she wrestles with her past and is forced to confront The Reflections of Queen Snow White.
A REVIEW OF DAVID MEREDITH'S THE REFLECTIONS OF QUEEN SNOW WHITE
David Meredith's The Reflections of Queen Snow White is a sequel to the well known fairy tale about Snow White. It's a fresh and intriguing take on this classic fairy tale. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time that anybody has written this kind of a book about Snow White, because it tells what happened to Snow White after she got Prince Charming.
Snow White has become a legendary and famous fairy tale and I think that most readers have heard of it. It's one of the best known fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. Disney has also contributed to its success by filming a classic animated film in 1937. This new Snow White fairy tale is different from all previous Snow White fairy tales, because it has been written for adults and the author explores Snow White's life and feelings. It's a surprisingly clever and intelligent story about love, loss, sadness and hope.
Here's information about the story:
Queen Snow White is lonely and depressed after the death of the King. She is unable to find joy in her daughter's forthcoming wedding. She just wants to be alone. Soon she finds herself facing the magic mirror that her evil stepmother used and with the help of the mirror she sees reflections of her own life...
As you can see, this story is something new and different. The author has had courage to mold a famous fairy tale into a new format by writing boldly about Snow White's life. It's great that he explores what happened to Snow White after "...and they lived happily ever after". Fairy tales normally end with these famous words, so readers won't get to see what happens to the characters afterwards, but now readers have a chance to read about Snow White's life. I'm sure that several readers will be delighted to read about her life, because the author explores her life in a good way.
In my opinion David Meredith writes fluently about Snow White's depression and loneliness. It's easy for the reader to believe that she loved Charming and misses him badly. She's unable to be happy, although she has a good reason to be happy, because her daugher, Raven, is getting married.
By looking into the mirror the author lets his readers see what Snow White's life was like and how she became the person she is now. He explores her past and what happened to her in vivid details. This is genuinely fascinating, because many things have happened to Snow White along the years. For example, the author shows how badly and brutally Snow White's stepmother treated her.
As I already mentioned, this book is for adults. There's sex in this book and that's one of the reasons why it can only be recommended to adult readers. The sex scene is surprisingly explicit and erotic.
I liked this book very much, because it was something different. Another reason why I liked this book was the author's writing style. He writes fluent fantasy and dares to explore difficult themes within fantasy context. I hope he continues to write fantasy, because he seems to be a talented author.
The Reflections of Queen Snow White is a well written fairy tale for adults. It's a fast read and the story is interesting. I can recommend it to readers who are interested in fairy tales.
Good fantasy entertainment for adults!
