James Maxwell

James Maxwell

James Maxwell is a science fiction and fantasy author. Born in New Zealand and educated in Australia, from a young age he was influenced by the fantasy classics (C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Jack Vance, Weis & Hickman, David Gemmell, Robert Jordan) before moving on to science fiction (Frank Herbert, Isaac Asimov) and then historical fiction (Wilbur Smith, Ken Follett).

At age 11 he used his parents' MS-DOS computer (with its shiny 20MB hard drive) to teach himself programming, and also to write a 40,000 word fantasy novelette. A year later, aged 12, he attended his first writer's workshop, a three day writer's camp, working with published Australian authors and learning about the industry and the craft. Unfortunately, as yet, no publishers or agents were knocking on the door.

He moved out of home at 18 and by 19 was the sole webmaster of an Australian government department. At 21 he founded a software company and took on extra staff to help with the business.

But four years later, aged 25, he left Australia behind to see the world. By 30 he'd visited 50 countries in six continents and had lived in New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, and the U.K. It was while living in Thailand that he seriously took up writing again, eventually making a decision to retire from software aged 32.

By 35, after also living in Mexico, Austria and Malta, James Maxwell had published four novels and reached the number one spot on several bestseller lists. Most of the time he can be found living in a Victorian property in North London, when he isn't seeking inspiration around the world.
