Ancient Echoes

by Robert Holdstock
Release date: 1996
Type: speculative fiction
Genres: fantasy

Jack must brave prehistoric beasts and terrifying enchantments as he seeks the green-faced woman.

Jack Chatwin sees visions, strange visions that leave tangible evidence – sounds and smells which linger afterwards. He sees two primitive hunters, Greyface and Greenface, a brother and sister. He calls them bullrunners. Their world could be the past, or the future, or even a parallel to Earth, but wherever – whatever – their world is, Greyface and Greenface are fleeing a terrible event.

Jack agrees to take part in experiments to investigate the ghostly figures in his mind's eye, but his life is shattered when Greyface breaks free and kidnaps his young daughter. He will use the girl to force Jack to hunt down Greenface, still trapped in her own world, and make her follow her brother-husband, even against her own wishes. And though Greyface returns Jack's daughter, he keeps a shadow of her, which takes on a life of its own. If Jack refuses to cooperate, the shadow will drain his daughter's vitality and personality – and her very future.

Ancient Echoes is both a resonant tale of ancient mythic wonder and a mesmerising psychological fantasy thriller by 'one of the finest living crafters of myth' (PUBLISHERS WEEKLY).
