Plays of Gods and Men
The four plays collected in Plays of Gods and Men (first published together in volume form in 1915) have been performed on London stage and abroad. Their fantastic vaule is clear: magic is present both on- and off-stage, and the effect of having Dunsany's richly jeweled words spoken by actors must have thrilled audiences. These plays are as easily readable - and just as wondrous - as Dunsany's prose works, and reading them provides a unique experience, since the supernatural elements are surely better imagined than staged.
It is the sheer artistry and beauty of language, not to mention sustained and controlled imaginative invention, that made Lord Dunsany so influential a writer. No one in the world writes quite like this any longer; few men ever did.
Lord Dunsany
Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany (1878–1957) was an Anglo-Irish writer and dramatist, notable for his work in fantasy published under the name Lord Dunsany. He was born to one of the oldest titles in the Irish peerage, lived much of his life at perhaps Ireland's longest-inhabited home, Dunsany Castle near Tara, and died in Dublin.
