Only when they are on the mainland, continuing Layla’s tradition of assisting others, do Max and Rachel grant themselves the luxuries of laughter and speaking freely. They slip into a comfortable friendship that becomes disrupted when Rachel’s old acquaintance, Caden, returns to her life and attempts to persuade her to leave her home and family to be with him. To make matters worse, the Titans increase their search efforts around the lake and find the island.
