Brian Jacques' Redwall series appears to have one final adventure left to tell.
Orphans of Mossflower, a previously unpublished novel credited to Jacques, has surfaced in publishing catalog information with a September 2027 release. If the listing holds, it will become the 23rd and final novel in the Redwall series, arriving more than sixteen years after Jacques' death and the publication of The Rogue Crew.
For a fantasy series that had effectively been considered complete since 2011, that makes Orphans of Mossflower an unusually unexpected return.
Redwall returns after more than a decade
What followed became a remarkably long-running fantasy saga. Jacques ultimately wrote 22 published Redwall novels, moving across different periods in the world's history rather than following a single uninterrupted chronology.
The final published novel, The Rogue Crew, appeared in 2011, shortly after Jacques died at the age of 71. For the next fifteen years, it appeared to mark the end of the series.
That assumption has now been thrown into question by Orphans of Mossflower.
The new title was discovered through publishing catalog information on Edelweiss, where it has been presented as the final book in the series. Current information points to publication on September 7, 2027.
The timing is particularly appropriate. The original Redwall was first published in Britain in 1986 and reached the United States in 1987, making 2027 the 40th anniversary of its American publication.
A new boxed set of the previous 22 novels and a broader repackaging of the series are also reportedly planned around the anniversary.
Was there always another Redwall novel?
Perhaps the most intriguing part of the story is that evidence of another Brian Jacques manuscript has existed for years.
In 2010, Penguin ran a competition that allowed a reader to name a character who was expected to appear in an upcoming Redwall novel. The winning character was Reisa Kartwell, described as a haremaiden and cartographer associated with Salamandastron.
But when The Rogue Crew appeared, Reisa was nowhere to be found.
That left Redwall readers with an unresolved question. Had Jacques been planning another novel?
The appearance of Orphans of Mossflower more than fifteen years later provides a possible answer.
