Assassin's Honor (The Assassins of Landria #1) by Gail Z. Martin
My Assassins of Landria series isn’t the typical epic fantasy. For one thing, it’s intended to have shorter books for readers who love the feel of epic fantasy but don’t have the time to read thick books. It’s deliberately lighter and funnier—more of a buddy flick. If Butch and Sundance were medieval assassins, they’d be Ridge and Rett, the main characters.

Fugitive’s Vow is the third book in the series, following Assassin’s Honor and Sellsword’s Oath. In the first two books, Ridge and Rett break a lot of rules and blow plenty of things up as they use their exceptional-but-unorthodox skills as assassins to save the king from plots against the throne by the followers of the Witch Lord, a wandering mystic stirring dissent. In Fugitive’s Vow, it looks like the Witch Lord may have been defeated, although Ridge and Rett don’t really believe that, and neither does their handler, Burke. Then tragedy strikes, the kingdom is in jeopardy, Rett is missing, and Ridge becomes a fugitive to escape unjust charges against him. Landria’s fate hangs in the balance, leaving Ridge and Rett to make hard and dangerous choices.

Sellsword's Oath (The Assassins of Landria #2) by Gail Z. Martin
We get to see some favorite secondary characters return from the prior books. Henri, Ridge and Rett’s ingenious valet, is back, defying convention, skirting the law and leveraging his legal and not-so-legal web of contacts to help the cause. Kane, an infamous spy, returns, as does Malachi, Kane’s necromancer friend. Lady Sally Anne is still harboring fugitives in her fortress at Harrowmont—women fleeing abusive marriages and the psychic children that the Witch Lord has been trying to kidnap and traffic. Lorella Solens, the medium, is back to help with messages from across the Veil, as is Edvard the ghost spy.

We meet some new characters as well, including Gil and Luc. Gil is nobleman’s son who uses his illicit psychic abilities to deliver comeuppance to those who see themselves above the law. That works until the king is forced to intervene and gives Gil a choice between being conscripted into the army for his abilities or to work with Luc, a sheriff whose unusual-but-effective approach to law enforcement also required the king to step in. They’re an odd couple, but working together on the king’s special projects is the only way for them to keep their freedom.

Check out the series and get in on the excitement!
