Gerbert was born a farmer's son, but his thirst for knowledge would take him far from his native soil. He began his search for enlightenment as a humble monk in Gaul. Driven to learn more than his superiors at the monastery could teach him and fearful he would succumb to the wild magic of the witches who sought to tempt him, he eagerly accepted a transfer to Barcelona.

There, Bishop Hatto, recognizing the youth's potential, agreed to personally school him in mathematics, astronomy... all the wonders discovered ages earlier by the Greeks and Romans. Yet to Gerbert's surprise, the bishop also offered him the chance to master another Art, introducing the young monk to the Moorish sorcerer who had saved Hatto's own life years before.

With all the secrets of white magic suddenly within his grasp, Gerbert could no longer turn away from the latent power within himself. But Gerbert would pay dearly for such learning – by falling under the spell of a Jinniyah that had been imprisoned in a head of bronze by his mentor's ancestors.
