Daughter of the Burning City

by Amanda Foody
Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody
Unrated

A darkly irresistible new fantasy set in the infamous Gomorrah Festival, a traveling carnival of debauchery that caters to the strangest of dreams and desires.

Sixteen-year-old Sorina has spent most of her life within the smoldering borders of the Gomorrah Festival. Yet even among the many unusual members of the traveling circus-city, Sorina stands apart as the only illusion-worker born in hundreds of years. This rare talent allows her to create illusions that others can see, feel and touch, with personalities all their own. Her creations are her family, and together they make up the cast of the Festival’s Freak Show.

But no matter how lifelike they may seem, her illusions are still just that — illusions, and not truly real. Or so she always believed... until one of them is murdered.

Desperate to protect her family, Sorina must track down the culprit and determine how they killed a person who doesn’t actually exist. Her search for answers leads her to the self-proclaimed gossip-worker Luca, and their investigation sends them through a haze of political turmoil and forbidden romance, and into the most sinister corners of the Festival. But as the killer continues murdering Sorina’s illusions one by one, she must unravel the horrifying truth before all of her loved ones disappear.

Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Amanda’s early years were spent crafting stories filled with wonder, magic, and the occasional monster. After earning a degree in English Literature from the College of William & Mary, she returned to the page with a fierce determination to share the worlds she built in her head with readers around the world.

In her debut The Shadow Game series, she introduced readers to a high-stakes world of magic, treachery, and dangerous alliances—a hallmark of her storytelling style that combines deep emotional connections with breathless action. Since then, Amanda has built on that foundation with works like All of Us Villains, co-authored with Christine Lynn Herman, which quickly became a fan favorite for its unique spin on the YA fantasy genre. Her works have found a home in top literary circles, including publications like Buzzfeed, Popsugar, and Culturess.

What sets Amanda apart in the crowded field of fantasy is her knack for creating nuanced characters and morally complex worlds. Her stories often explore themes of destiny, power, and identity, weaving together intense personal stakes with wide-reaching, world-changing conflicts. It’s this blend of deep character exploration and high-stakes drama that leaves readers eagerly anticipating what comes next.

When she's not bringing her next magical world to life, Amanda enjoys culinary experiments (with a particular affection for cooking up recipes inspired by her books) and sharing her creative journey with her readers.

As she continues to expand her magical universes—Wilderlore fans can look forward to The Night Compass in 2024—Amanda Foody remains one of the brightest voices in modern fantasy. If you’re looking for sweeping adventures, unforgettable characters, and a touch of magic in every corner, Amanda’s books are waiting for you.
