Almost & Nevermore

Nevermore Trilogy #1 / 2

Almost & Nevermore (Nevermore Trilogy #1) by W. S. Vock

The world of Sordos is in pieces. Not in a metaphorical or poetic sense, but in a very literal, physical way. During the Great War centuries ago, the magical forces that controlled the land - the Fae, Demons, Mer, and Beastkin - collided in a brilliant and destructive clash of magic that left the world shattered into four separate fragments. Now, the Crest, the Talon, the Great Reef, and the Maw surround the formal battlefield, which has become nothing more than a Pit of desolation. The continents and their respective people have only become more isolated since the Great War, and fear, prejudice, and hate have continued to fester. At least for those who remain.

During the final clash that released the destructive force of magic throughout Sordos, the Fae, Demons, Beastkin, and Mer were obliterated by their own magical backlash. The humans were unable to survive the cataclysmic shifts in the world's ecosystems, so they are now extinct as well. The only ones who remain are those who were something in between. The human lines who at one point had greater magic gifted to them by more powerful beings. Now, with their wings, horns, tails, and claws, these hybrids cling to remnants of the world's remaining magic, creating their own societies customs.

The plot:

Hundreds of years after the Great War, Fwen Volis is a terrible princess, and she knows it. After the warriors from the Maw, the descendants of Demonkind, invaded her home in the Crest six years ago, she was left as scarred on the outside as she felt on the inside. Now, she's little more than a pawn in her father's game, forced to serve as a symbol and a reminder of endurance for her people. After she sneaks out to a tavern and tangles with Aeven, a handsome stranger who makes the loneliest parts of her ache, her life flips upside down all over again. Her father orders her to a neighboring territory to wed a noble's son, and Fwen finds herself more than a little uncomfortable when she finds out that Aeven is one of the guards assigned to escort her there.

Throughout the journey, Fwen starts to question her circumstances, finally getting a glimpse of the life she feels she was born to live. She's always been a terrible princess, but life at Aeven's side may be exactly what she needs. Banter, pining, and tension abound, but there's a lot more going on in the world than this doomed romance. Fwen's past is full of dark secrets, and Aeven harbors more than a few of his own. The only question now is whose secrets will likely get them killed first.

Almost & Nevermore is brand new romantasy filled with a mix of humor, heartbreak, and heat (yes, that kind of heat). With a unique magic system and a new world to explore, it's going to be a wild ride!
