The Stepford Wives
When Joanna and Walter move to the quiet Connecticut town of Stepford, it seems an ideal new home for the young couple. But when Joanna starts asking why all the town's husbands spend so much time at the Men's Association and why the women are so slavishly devoted to fulfilling their spouses' every wish, she finds some dark secrets buried in the heart of American suburbia...
First published in the early 70s, Ira Levin's novel hypothesised how far men might be prepared to go to stem the advance of the feminist movement. Having rewritten William Goldman's adaptation of Levin's book, director Bryan Forbes made a successful movie version of The Stepford Wives in 1974. In a specially written foreword, Forbes acknowledges the popularity of the film among gay and lesbian audiences, rebuts the criticism Goldman levelled at him for the changes to his script and notes, "Mr Levin... had no complaints about my treatment of the novel."
