Anna plans to use the treasure to negotiate her father's release. With the help of Torrie, Anna and her aged crew of retired pirates embark on a wild and colorful sea journey.
On their way to search for the treasure, the crew pulls aboard a young castaway. He turns out to be Nevilla's son, Prince Frederick. He explains the hard times that have visited the now barren and infertile Granite Isles, where he lives. It turns out Anna's grandfather's treasure may unlock the curse that has beset the Isles for years.

K. V. Johansen (born 1968) was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where she developed her lifelong fascination with fantasy literature after reading The Lord of the Rings at the age of eight. Her interest in the history and languages of the Middle Ages led her to take a Master’s Degree in Medieval Studies at the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto, and a second M.A. in English Literature at McMaster University, where she wrote her thesis on Layamon’s Brut, an Early Middle English epic poem.
