The Keys to D'Espérance

The Keys to D'Espérance was published as a limited edition chapbook in October 1998 by The Subterranean Press, with an introduction by Peter Crowther. The edition was limited to 250 signed/numbered copies.
The author classes The Keys to D'Espérance as something of an oddity. It's a 9000 word novella which he intended to be the first in a series of stories that would look at the history of Britain this century, from a fairly askance angle and via the medium of a very strange house indeed – D'Espérance.
The author believes that The Keys to D'Espérance is one of the best pieces he has written.
The Keys to D'Espérance was reprinted in Mammoth Book of the Best New Horror, edited by Stephen Jones, (Robinson, 1999).

Chaz Brenchley (born 1959) is a British writer of novels and short stories, associated with the genres of horror, crime and fantasy.
Winner of the British Fantasy Society's August Derleth Award in 1998 for Light Errant (and not, as often stated, the Outremer series), he has also published three books for children and more than 500 short stories in various genres.
