Once a year, the town of Desolada celebrates death in three ways:

...is the holiday of Diane Lassiter celebrated as a child. Before she moved to Desolada. Before she heard the dark stories of the ancient past.

...is the local tradition, when Spanish children eat sugar skulls and honor the dead with family feasts in the graveyard.
