Harry Bates (1900–1981) was an American science fiction
editor and writer. He was a pioneering editor and author in the
creation and development of twentieth century science fiction. His
classic 1940 short story "Farewell to the Master" was the basis of the landmark 1951 science fiction movie The Day the Earth Stood Still, which is widely regarded as the greatest science fiction movie of all-time.
