Starcrossed

Starcrossed Trilogy #1 / 3
by Josephine Angelini
Starcrossed (Starcrossed Trilogy #1) by Josephine Angelini
★ 7.00 / 2

Set on the island of Nantucket, STARCROSSED tells the tale of Helen Hamilton, a young woman whose destiny is forever altered when she meets Lucas Delos and tries to kill him in front of her entire high school. Which is terribly inconvenient, not only because Lucas is the most beautiful boy on the island, but also because Helen is so achingly shy she suffers physical pain whenever she is given too much attention.

Making matters worse, Helen is beginning to suspect she’s going crazy. Whenever she’s near Lucas or any member of his family she sees the ghostly apparitions of three women weeping bloody tears, and suffers the burden of an intense and irrational hate. She soon learns that she and Lucas are destined to play the leading roles in a Greek tragedy that the Three Fates insist on repeating over and over again throughout history. Like her namesake, Helen of Troy, she’s destined to start a war by falling in love. But even though Lucas and Helen can see their own star-crossed destiny, they’re still powerfully attracted to each other. Will they give up their personal happiness for the greater good, or risk it all to be together?

Josephine Angelini

Josie was born in a tiny town in Massachusetts called Ashland. When she meets people from Massachusetts and tells them 'what part' she hails from, she usually gets one of two answers. The first is: "Isn't that in Oregon?" And the second is: "I drove by it once on Rt. 9, I think."

Her next stop was about as different from Ashland as it gets without leaving the country. As soon as Josie was legal, she packed a bag and moved to New York City to attend NYU. Somehow, she managed to squeeze in a little higher learning between bartending shifts and graduated with a BFA.

Massively in debt with college loans, she then moved to Los Angeles for reasons that are still a little blurry. Something about the weather was mentioned, and a vague idea to write poetry and find herself. She found that she is a terrible poet, but she never gave up on the writing bit.

Josie still lives in Los Angeles with her husband and daughter, and now writes YA fiction.

★★★★★★☆☆☆☆ 6 / 10

I've read this book a few times already but never reviewed it.

Firstly, there is a LOT of story in this. Starcrossed certainly isn't a quick and easy read. Plus, its written in 3rd person and at times was vague and abstract.

Helen is a tall blond girl with immense strength and speed. She wears a necklace, a gift from her mother, which she never takes off regardless of the fact her mother left home when she was small and never returned. Helen was brought up by her wonderful father and works part time at his newspaper and cake store. She has a best friend called Claire and has lived in Nantucket all her life.

However, when a new family come to the island the school and town people all come alive with gossip about the large family. Helen doesn't really want to know and thinks everyone is sticking their noses in but Claire fills in all the details about the gorgeous sons who are all their age and will be in their classes.

From the moment Helen spotted Lucas she had this urge to kill him. She can't look at him without also seeing 3 small women tearing at their hair until blood seeps. Something is going on and Helen gets really ill in the first few days they attend school.

Helen's always suffered from stomach cramps too whenever anyone takes too much of an interest in her. But when she has a creepy man follow her, it's the new boys from the family that take care of her.

The story unravels slowly with careful attention spent on Helen and Lucas and their relationship. There's almost half the book spent on their time at school with the other cousins and how they become friendly with Helen's small group. After Helen's attack she spends every afternoon learning how to fight so she be ready the next time. Again, much of the book is spent going over how they practice and with whom.

There were a few little cute things in the story to keep it traveling. It's only around the halfway mark that people start noticing Helen's necklace, and a reason for that popped up. Her father and Kate's relationship has a feel good factor to it.

It's only near the end when Helen's mum comes back into the story that the pace starts to quicken. There is also Creon, who is one of the Hundred Cousins, and his point of view.

Much of the end plot twist with Creon, Hector and Daphne felt rushed with a lot of info dump. Almost as if the author needed to speed things up a bit to write the ending. I'm not going to say I loved it. The writing is good but heavy. The plot twists and turns quickly which I did like. I'll get started on Dreamless (Starcrossed #2) as soon as my eyes become uncrossed!

★★★★★★★★☆☆ 8 / 10

For the first 50 or so pages I thought this was going to be just like Twilight. Initially there are lots of similarities between Helen Hamilton and Bella. For instance they both are living with their dad and both feel a bit out of it at high school. However, from about page 50 onwards this story takes on a life of it’s own. With demigods, Greek mythology, furies, the underworld. It is a fast paced page turner. And Lucas Delos is the perfect heart throb. I hope there is a sequel coming soon because the ending left me wanting so much more!
