In London, Emma Tate has lived with her owns fears for more than two years. Her job is in jeopardy, her parents have been killed in a car crash that she blames herself for, her husband's business is failing. Emma's life is collapsing around her.

Seeking some kind of respite, Emma, her husband and two of their friends hope to find some temporary peace in a luxury house in the countryside close to Roxton. But Emma and her companions have secrets that are best kept hidden. During the course of their stay they will discover things about themselves and about each other that will bring undreamed-of horrors...

Roxton is a place of secrets. What was the reason for the closure of the mine that had been the life-blood of the town? What riddles are hidden in the stained glass of the church? What mysterious force is at large?
