Matthew Lewis
Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775–1818) was an English novelist and dramatist, often referred to as "Monk" Lewis, because of the success of his classic Gothic novel, The Monk.
Sometimes called the first modern horror novel in English, The Monk bridges the gap between the earlier Gothic pioneers Anne Radcliffe and Horace Walpole, and the later complex works of Charles Maturin.
