★★★★★★★★★☆ 9 / 10

The first in a loosely linked trilogy, which work backwards in time from 1960 to 1860 via WW1. (Red Die and Shadowbourne are the other 2). Albion's Dream is nothing less than a modern classic. Written with a poet's eye and with a deep knowledge of landscape,, myth, archetype and character, Norman weaves a powerful story told through the young schoolboy Yeoman. He struggles with adult deception and evil via an old family heirloom game, and his realisation that playing the game is having strange repercussions in the here and now forces him to decide whether he must play to the end. If you have enjoyed Neil Gaiman, Susan Cooper or Alan Garner, you will find much here to enjoy . Albion's Dream is sure to join them on your bookshelf (real or virtual)
