The world was run by elvenlords.

Powerful, proud, secure in their dominion over the puny humans and halfbreeds, they built cities of wondrous beauty, kept legions of slaves for work and entertainment, and took their pleasure with Elven or human concubines. The Prophecy was the only cloud on an otherwise perfectly clear horizon of Elven supremacy.

In the desert, Serina Daeth, formerly the favored human concubine of Elven overlord Dryan, is about to change all that. Driven into the desert when her lord discovered her pregnancy, as planned by a jealous rival who tampered with Serina's anti-fertility drugs, she dreams - as she dies - of a midwife helping her deliver her baby. She doesn't realize her dream is the dragon shaman Alara, shapechanged to provide the mercy of midwifery as a human.

Alara, herself about to give birth, takes pity on the babe and with her son, Keman, raises the girl, Shana. Father Dragon, the wisest shaman of the dragons, can tell the halfbreed is more than a mere pest in their midst. She is that most dangerous and treasured person, the fulfillment of the Prophecy, whose magic and fortunes will remake the world. Shana, full of her own bright dreams of the future little realizes the love, betrayal, wizardry and adventure that lie ahead for her and those who become part of her extraordinary life. For her story is legend, the true myth and history of the Elvenbane.

Mercedes Lackey

Mercedes Lackey

Mercedes Ritchie Lackey (born 1950) is an American writer of fantasy novels. Many of her novels and trilogies are interlinked and set in the world of Velgarth, mostly in and around the country of Valdemar. Her Valdemar novels form a complex tapestry of interaction between human and non-human protagonists with many different cultures and social mores.

Her other main world is one much like our own, but it includes clandestine populations of elves, mages, vampires, and other mythical beings. The Bedlam's Bard books describe a young man with the power to work magic through music; the SERRAted Edge books are about racecar driving elves; and the Diana Tregarde thrillers center on a Wiccan who combats evil.

She has also published several novels re-working well-known fairy tales set in a mid-19th to early 20th century setting in which magic is real, although hidden from the mundane world. These novels explore issues of ecology, social class, and gender roles.

Lackey has published over 140 books and writes novels at a rate of 5.5 per year on average. She has been called one of the "most prolific science fiction and fantasy writers of all time."
