NEW ENTRY IN THE BESTSELLING MONSTER HUNTER INTERNATIONAL SERIES BY DRAGON AWARD WINNING AUTHORS LARRY CORREIA AND SARAH A. HOYT

When Owen Pitt and the rest of the Monster Hunter International crew are called away to mount a month’s-long rescue mission in a monster-infested nightmare dimension, Julie Shackleford — Owen’s wife and descendant of MHI founder Bubba Shackelford — is left behind. Her task: hold down the fort and take care of her new baby son Ray. Julie’s devoted to the little guy, but the slow pace of office work and maternity leave are starting to get to her. But when a routine field call brings her face-to-face with an unspeakable evil calling itself Brother Death, she’ll get more excitement than she ever hoped for.

Julie is the Guardian of a powerful ancient artifact known as the Kamaresh Yar, and Brother Death wants it. In the wrong hands, it could destroy reality as we know it. Julie would die before giving it up.

Then Ray goes missing, taken by Brother Death. The price for his safe return: the Kamaresh Yar. If Julie doesn’t hand over the artifact it means death — or worse — for baby Ray. With no other choice left to her, Julie agrees to Brother Death’s demands. But when you’re dealing with an ancient evil, the devil is in the details.

To reclaim her son, Julie Shackleford will have to fight her way through necromantic death cults, child-stealing monsters, and worse. And she’ll have to do it all before Brother Death can unleash the Kamaresh Yar.

It’s one woman against an army of monsters. But Julie Shackelford is no ordinary woman — she’s one tough mother!

Sarah A. Hoyt

Sarah A. Hoyt is an author who also writes under the names Sarah D'Almeida and Elise Hyatt.

Hoyt writes fiction in various genres. Most notably, the first book in her Shakespearean fantasy series Ill Met by Moonlight, was a finalist for the 2002 Mythopoeic Fantasy Award (which was instead won by Lois McMaster Bujold).

Her Musketeer's series begins with Death of a Musketeer, a Mystery Book Club selection and includes three other titles from Berkley Prime Crime.

Her favourite genre, however, remains science fiction and fantasy, and Hoyt is a prolific writer with dozens of short stories published. Her shapeshifter series include Draw One in the Dark and Gentleman Takes a Chance, urban fantasy adventures, from Baen Books. Also from Baen Books is her Darkship series beginning with Darkship Thieves, winner of the Prometheus Award for libertarian science fiction.

The British Empire Series takes place in a parallel world, where history from Charlemagne to Queen Victoria parallels ours but is actuated through the workings of magic and not by science and technology. The series consists of three books: Heart of Light, which takes place in Victorian Africa; Soul of Fire, which unfolds in India; and Heart and Soul, which enmeshes itself in the chaos of 19th century China.

Under the house name Laurien Gardner, she has written Plain Jane for Jove Books Historical Fiction. She also edited the anthology Something Magic This Way Comes.

She has also written a series of mysteries centered on furniture refinishing under the pen name of Elise Hyatt. These stories are set in the same city of Goldport, Colorado as her shifter series, with some characters appearing in both series.

Monster Hunter

In a world where monsters lurk in the shadows and the supernatural is an everyday reality, the Monster Hunter series by Larry Correia brings a refreshing mix of explosive action, dark humor, and heart-pounding adventure. Forget everything you think you know about traditional urban fantasy—this series flips the script, offering a unique blend of gun-toting anti-heroes, dangerous creatures, and a touch of the absurd.

The Monster Hunter series follows a ragtag group of misfit hunters who have taken on the dangerous and lucrative job of eliminating the world’s deadliest monsters. From the first book, Monster Hunter International, readers are thrown into a world where no creature is safe, and the only way to survive is to outgun or outwit the terrifying supernatural threats that plague humanity. The stakes are high, and the action never lets up, as these hunters face creatures of all shapes and sizes—from vampires to werewolves, to much darker things lurking beneath the surface.

At its core, the series is about more than just killing monsters. It's about duty, honor, and what it means to fight for something bigger than yourself. Each character, from the tough-as-nails protagonist Owen Zastava Pitt to his team of colorful and capable misfits, is more than just a monster-slayer—they’re people with flaws, dreams, and personal demons. The bonds they form, the conflicts they face, and the growth they undergo make the Monster Hunter series a journey as much about the characters as it is about the battles they fight.

Larry Correia’s signature blend of fast-paced action, gun-fight intensity, and clever world-building makes this series stand out in a genre often dominated by more traditional heroes and vampires. His witty dialogue and dark humor add a unique flavor to the traditional monster-hunting story, creating a world that feels lived-in and richly detailed, where danger is always around the corner, but the characters' courage and camaraderie shine through.

Perfect for fans of urban fantasy and supernatural thrillers, the Monster Hunter series is a thrilling ride that doesn’t hold back. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to live in a world where fighting monsters is just another day at the office, this series is your answer.

Monster Hunter consists of eight primary books, and includes one additional book that complement the series but is not considered mandatory reads — series is set to expand with the upcoming release of one more book. The current recommended reading order for the series is provided below.
