With a ruthless sect of humanity intent on wiping out their species, five intrepid heroes must outsmart their enemies in this epic sci-fi adventure for fans of The Expanse and Battlestar Galactica.

The galaxy was once terrorized by the Sturm, "species purists" intent on destroying any human with genetic or cybernetic enhancements. They cut a bloody swath across the stars, killing countless people before finally being defeated. Centuries later, this sect has returned, close to the brink of victory. Now five people, bereft of their advanced technology and support, must work together to stand against the invaders:

Commander Lucinda Hardy, a legendary captain thrust into uncertain command of the fleet's last ship once the military falls. Booker, an ex-military man whose time on death row is cut short when the Sturm attack his prison compound and accidentally set him free. Alessia, a royal on the run once her home planet is overrun and her family executed. Seph, the leader of a cybernetically enhanced crew of crooks who must pitch in to defeat the invaders. And finally, Mac, who was the famous hero of the original battle with the Sturm hundreds of years ago. But this latest fight may be his last.

To win, the heroes cannot simply defeat the Sturm. They must be as the Sturm are: ruthless, relentless, and resourceful.

They must become liberators. And destroyers.

John Birmingham

John Birmingham

John Birmingham is an Australian author whose work blends history, speculative fiction, and an unflinching look at human resilience. With a knack for writing high-octane thrillers and thought-provoking dystopian narratives, Birmingham has made a name for himself as a writer unafraid to push boundaries—whether exploring the devastating consequences of alternate history or tackling the existential chaos of the modern world.

Birmingham's storytelling career began with a unique mix of commentary on the absurdity of life and an exploration of what happens when the world as we know it suddenly shifts. His Axis of Time series, which imagines a world where a modern naval fleet is transported back in time to World War II, was one of his early forays into mixing historical events with speculative twists. The series not only captivated readers with its thrilling action sequences but also sparked conversations about the nature of war, power, and humanity's ability to adapt.

Birmingham’s work stands out in its ability to balance intense action with complex character development. In his The Disappearance series, for instance, he delves into the aftermath of a global event that causes people to simply vanish, offering a deep dive into the chaos that ensues. The tone is darker, filled with high tension and a palpable sense of loss, but there’s always an underlying current of hope and resilience that shines through.

Though his novels often deal with apocalyptic and dystopian themes, Birmingham’s approach is deeply human. He doesn't just ask "what if the world ended?"—he asks, "what do we do next?" This curiosity about the human spirit is central to his work, making his stories not just thrilling but thought-provoking as well.

Beyond his novels, Birmingham has a reputation for his sharp wit and insightful commentary on society, politics, and culture. His career as a journalist and columnist informs his writing, allowing him to craft stories that are not only engaging but also grounded in real-world issues and dilemmas. His sharp, satirical voice, combined with a deep understanding of human nature, elevates his books beyond mere entertainment into a space where readers can reflect on the world around them.

As a writer, Birmingham has always been unapologetically bold. Whether he’s dissecting the horrors of war or imagining an alternate history where civilization is upended, he brings an honesty and grit to his storytelling that resonates with readers. His works are an exploration of what happens when the world we know crumbles—and how we rebuild from the wreckage.

In every novel, John Birmingham invites readers not just to escape into thrilling narratives but to think about the world we live in, challenging them to ask tough questions and, perhaps, reconsider how we might react when faced with the unimaginable.

The Cruel Stars

The Cruel Stars series by John Birmingham invites readers to embark on a thrilling, high-stakes adventure set in a universe on the brink of destruction. At the heart of the series is a struggle for survival in the aftermath of an alien invasion. Earth is no longer the safe haven it once was, and humanity’s future rests in the hands of an unlikely crew—veterans, rebels, and exiles, each of whom is haunted by their past. With a relentless alien force sweeping across the galaxy, the characters must navigate not only the challenges of warfare but also the moral ambiguities of survival, loyalty, and sacrifice. Birmingham’s writing keeps readers on edge, offering intricate plots and character-driven tension with every page.

The world-building is vast and immersive, with Birmingham painting a galaxy full of diverse planets, technologies, and civilizations. The war between the humans and the invading aliens is not just a backdrop for the story; it’s a catalyst that shapes the series' characters and propels them into action. Along the way, alliances are tested, power is constantly shifting, and the cost of freedom becomes a heavy burden.

What sets The Cruel Stars apart from other space operas is its deep exploration of the human condition amid cosmic chaos. The characters are not larger-than-life heroes but flawed, complex individuals making impossible decisions in the face of annihilation. Birmingham's narrative skillfully blends these personal stakes with the grand scale of the galactic war, creating an experience that is both intimate and vast, personal and universal.

As the series unfolds, it asks tough questions about power, survival, and the nature of conflict—while delivering all the fast-paced action, suspense, and drama readers expect from a high-caliber sci-fi adventure. The Cruel Stars isn't just about saving the galaxy—it's about what makes us human, even when everything seems lost.

For fans of intelligent, character-driven space opera with high stakes and gritty, realistic portrayals of war, The Cruel Stars offers an unforgettable journey through the cosmos.
