Novice Dragoneer

Dragoneer Academy #1 / 3
by E. E. Knight
Novice Dragoneer (Dragoneer Academy #1) by E. E. Knight
Unrated

In the first book in an exciting and charming new coming-of-age fantasy series from the author of the Age of Fire series, an impoverished girl enters into a military order of dragonriders, but her path won't be as easy or as straightforward as she expected.

Fourteen-year-old Ileth grew up in an orphanage, and thanks to her stutter was never thought to be destined for much beyond kitchen work and cleaning. But she's dreamed of serving with the dragons ever since a childhood meeting with a glittering silver dragon and its female dragoneer. For years she waits, and as soon as she is old enough to join, Ileth runs away to become a novice dragoneer at the ancient human-dragon fortress of the Serpentine.

While most of her fellow apprentices are from rich and influential families, Ileth must fight for her place in the world, even if it includes a duel with her boss at the fish-gutting table. She's then sent off to the dragon-dancers after a foolish kiss with a famously named boy and given charge of a sickly old dragon with a mysterious past. But she finds those trials were nothing when she has to take the place of a dead dragoneer and care for his imprisoned dragon in enemy lands...

E. E. Knight

E. E. Knight

E.E. Knight writes the kind of speculative fiction that refuses to sit still. His work straddles the line between post-apocalyptic survival and high-stakes fantasy, laced with dry wit, rich world-building, and characters who endure—not because they’re invincible, but because they refuse to give in. Whether he's chronicling humanity’s last stand in the Vampire Earth series or sending dragons into the unknown in Age of Fire, Knight has a knack for weaving genre elements into something that feels both familiar and entirely his own.

A Midwesterner at heart, Knight grew up with a deep love for science fiction and fantasy paperbacks—those dog-eared novels passed around like treasure among friends. That affection shows in his writing: his stories are sharp and fast-paced, yet never rushed. He builds his worlds brick by brick, letting readers sink into their histories, hierarchies, and rules. His protagonists, whether they’re freedom fighters or fire-breathing outcasts, often grapple with questions of honor, duty, and survival in landscapes that test the very meaning of hope.

The Vampire Earth series, perhaps his most well-known work, doesn’t just play with the tropes of dystopian fiction—it retools them. Set in a future Earth overrun by alien predators who harvest human life energy, the series balances gritty action with moral complexity. It’s a story where resistance is brutal, victories are rare, and every decision carries a cost. And yet, there’s an undercurrent of resilience that keeps readers invested through each hard-earned chapter.

With Age of Fire, Knight took another turn—this time through the eyes of dragons. Told from their perspective, the series invites readers to reconsider what it means to be the monster and what survival looks like when your entire species is on the brink of extinction. It’s epic fantasy with an evolutionary twist, and it showcases Knight’s ability to blend the mythical with the personal.

Knight rarely writes flashy heroes. Instead, his characters earn their legend the long way—through grit, loyalty, and the occasional bout of dark humor. That grounded approach has made his books favorites among fans who want their escapism served with a dose of realism.

For those drawn to speculative fiction that explores power, loss, and identity against sprawling backdrops, E.E. Knight offers stories that linger long after the final page—quietly epic, thoughtfully told, and never quite what you expect.

Dragoneer Academy

At Dragoneer Academy, young minds are not just taught—they are transformed. In a world where dragons rule the skies, magic is a volatile force, and every student carries the weight of ancient expectations, this academy is the place where the next generation of warriors, mages, and dragonriders are forged. But for some, this journey is not as straightforward as it seems.

The story begins with a group of unlikely students, each from different corners of a vast and mysterious world, all brought together at this prestigious institution for a singular purpose: to master the dangerous art of dragonriding. What awaits them is far more than rigorous lessons and intense training—beneath the academy’s towering spires lies a world teetering on the brink of war, with dark secrets and ancient powers that threaten to tear everything apart.

The series pulses with high-stakes action, rich world-building, and complex characters. As the students train alongside their fiery companions, they begin to uncover more than just the politics of the academy. There are mysteries about the dragons themselves, forgotten prophecies, and a looming darkness that calls them to make impossible choices. The friendships they form—fierce, loyal, and often tested—become as important as their skills, and sometimes, even more so.

Dragoneer Academy is a captivating blend of classic fantasy tropes and fresh, immersive storytelling. Readers are drawn into a world where dragon-riding is as perilous as it is exhilarating, and where each decision could have life-or-death consequences. Whether it’s the powerful bond between dragon and rider, the unraveling mysteries of the academy’s past, or the growing tension between rival factions, the series pulses with intrigue and excitement, keeping readers hooked from the first page to the last.

For fans of epic fantasy and high adventure, this series offers a rich tapestry of magic, dragons, and political intrigue—perfect for those who long to lose themselves in a world where every choice shapes the fate of both humans and dragons alike.
