Noni was born in Dubbo, New South Wales, and spent the first seven years of her life on a sheep and wheat farm in rural Australia. When her family moved to Queensland's Sunshine Coast, the landscape around her changed, but her habit of escaping into imaginary worlds remained. As a child, she was an avid reader and spent hours daydreaming about magical places, even imagining that a letter from Hogwarts might eventually arrive. Those early fascinations would later find their way into her fiction.
She studied journalism, academic writing and human behaviour at university, initially without a clear plan to become a novelist. Eventually, however, she began writing for a simple reason: she wanted to create the sort of stories she herself wanted to read. That impulse became Akarnae, the 2015 opening novel of The Medoran Chronicles. The series introduced readers to Alexandra Jennings and the magical world of Medora, establishing many of the elements that would become characteristic of Noni's fiction: friendship tested by danger, extraordinary abilities, mysterious worlds and young characters discovering that they are capable of far more than they imagined.
With Whisper, Noni took her writing in a darker direction. Published in 2018, the novel follows Jane Doe, a young woman who has spent years imprisoned and subjected to experiments while refusing to speak. Its blend of science fiction, mystery and psychological tension earned the book the 2019 Australian Book Industry Award for Small Publishers' Children's Book of the Year and Australia's Gold Inky Award. The recognition marked an important moment in Noni's career, but Whisper also revealed how naturally she could move beyond conventional fantasy while retaining her fascination with secrets, resilience and characters trapped in extraordinary circumstances.
Her international readership grew considerably with The Prison Healer trilogy. Beginning with The Prison Healer, the series places Kiva Meridan inside Zalindov, a brutal prison where survival is uncertain and a deadly trial draws her into a much larger struggle involving political intrigue, rebellion, forbidden romance and dangerous revelations. The trilogy became one of Noni's best-known works, with The Prison Healer winning the 2022 ABIA Award for Book of the Year for Older Children (13+) and The Blood Traitor receiving the same honour in 2023. The series helped establish her as one of Australia's most widely read contemporary young adult fantasy writers.
Although fantasy remains at the heart of her bibliography, Noni has also explored other forms of high-stakes young adult fiction. Wandering Wild, published in 2025, moves away from magical kingdoms and into a contemporary wilderness survival story, combining danger and romance in an entirely different setting.
In 2026, she returned to fantasy with Shadow Reaper, the opening novel of a new duology. Set in the imperilled city of Avarell, the story follows seventeen-year-old Viridia Solace as forbidden magic, vengeance and a dangerous bargain draw her into a conflict much larger than she expected. The novel brings together many of the ingredients that readers have come to associate with Noni's fiction, including enemies-to-lovers tension, found family, secrets, magic and rapidly escalating danger, while opening a new chapter in her fantasy writing.
Away from the page, Noni remains closely connected to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. She has spoken about how important reading and imagination were during her childhood, influences that remain easy to recognize in the worlds she creates. Her career has since grown far beyond Australia: her books have sold more than a million copies worldwide, have been published in more than 20 countries, and have earned multiple Australian Book Industry Awards as well as the Gold Inky Award. Her work has also reached bestseller lists including The New York Times and The Sunday Times.
What ties her different books together is less a particular setting than an interest in people under pressure. Whether her characters are facing a magical realm, a prison, a scientific experiment or the dangers of the wilderness, they are repeatedly forced to decide whom they can trust and what they are willing to sacrifice.
