My Rabbit's Shadow Looks Like a Hand

Rhys Hughes

9.0 / 10
1 expectation

My Rabbit’s shadow
looks like a hand
that has contorted itself in order
to cast the shadow
of a rabbit on the wall—
a rabbit that looks just like
the shadow of a hand
contorted to enable the casting
of the shadow of a
rabbit on the wall...

I yearn for a friend
to distract my mind
from this recursion
or else to help me enjoy it—
a tropical woman
her shadow merging with mine
on the moonlit stage
of life as we peer
out of this ramshackle hutch
called the world

Author

Rhys Hughes

Rhys Henry Hughes (born 1966) is a Welsh writer and essayist. Born in Cardiff, Hughes is a prolific short story writer with an eclectic mix of influences, which include Italo Calvino, Milorad Pavić, Jorge Luis Borges, Stanisław Lem, Flann O'Brien, Felipe Alfau, Donald Barthelme and Jack Vance. Much of his work is of a humorously eccentric bent, often parodies and pastiches with surreal and absurdist overtones, although he is by no means limited to any of these forms and has proven to be extremely versatile. He has been published in Postscripts among many other places.
