One for the Money
You've lost your job as a department store lingerie buyer, your car's been repossessed, and most of your furniture and small appliances have been sold off to pay last month's rent. Now the rent is due again. And you live in New Jersey. What do you do?
If you're Stephanie Plum, you become a bounty hunter. But not just a nickel-and-dime bounty hunter; you go after the big money. That means a cop gone bad. And not just any cop. She goes after Joe Morelli, a disgraced former vice cop who is also the man who took Stephanie's virginity at age 16 and then wrote details on a bathroom wall. With pride and rent money on the line, Plum plunges headlong into her first case, one that pits her against ruthless adversaries - people who'd rather kill than lose.
In Stephanie Plum, Evanovich has created a resourceful and humorous character who stands apart from the pack of gritty female detectives.

Janet Evanovich
In a genre packed with corpses, car chases, and high-stakes drama, Janet Evanovich carved out a space all her own—where crime meets comedy, and chaos is just another day in the life of bounty hunter Stephanie Plum. Blending mystery with mischief and a dash of romantic tension, Evanovich didn’t just break the mold of the traditional detective novel—she reloaded it with glitter, attitude, and Trenton, New Jersey swagger.
Long before she became one of the most recognizable names in crime fiction, Evanovich was a working mom in New Hampshire, writing romance novels at the kitchen table between carpools and casseroles. Her early career in romance taught her pacing and character chemistry, but it wasn’t until she added explosions, handcuffs, and the occasional donut-fueled stakeout that her voice truly found its wild, unmistakable rhythm.
Stephanie Plum
In a world of cold, calculating crime fiction, the Stephanie Plum series flips the script—with high heels, hot tempers, and hilariously high-stakes mayhem. Set in the unglamorous heart of Trenton, New Jersey, this long-running series follows an underqualified bounty hunter with a knack for catching criminals—and blowing up cars along the way.
Stephanie Plum consists of thirty-one books and series is set to expand with the upcoming release of two more books. The current recommended reading order for the series is provided below.
Reviews and Comments
This book was a lot of fun to read. I have already seen the movie several times so I had an idea of what was supposed to happen but reading the book definitely gives you more character background than the movie does. I am glad that I saw the movie first though because it was cast really well. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
