You've lost your job as a department store lingerie buyer, your car's been repossessed, and most of your furniture and small appliances have been sold off to pay last month's rent. Now the rent is due again. And you live in New Jersey. What do you do?

If you're Stephanie Plum, you become a bounty hunter. But not just a nickel-and-dime bounty hunter; you go after the big money. That means a cop gone bad. And not just any cop. She goes after Joe Morelli, a disgraced former vice cop who is also the man who took Stephanie's virginity at age 16 and then wrote details on a bathroom wall. With pride and rent money on the line, Plum plunges headlong into her first case, one that pits her against ruthless adversaries - people who'd rather kill than lose.

In Stephanie Plum, Evanovich has created a resourceful and humorous character who stands apart from the pack of gritty female detectives.

Janet Evanovich

Janet Evanovich

In a genre packed with corpses, car chases, and high-stakes drama, Janet Evanovich carved out a space all her own—where crime meets comedy, and chaos is just another day in the life of bounty hunter Stephanie Plum. Blending mystery with mischief and a dash of romantic tension, Evanovich didn’t just break the mold of the traditional detective novel—she reloaded it with glitter, attitude, and Trenton, New Jersey swagger.

Long before she became one of the most recognizable names in crime fiction, Evanovich was a working mom in New Hampshire, writing romance novels at the kitchen table between carpools and casseroles. Her early career in romance taught her pacing and character chemistry, but it wasn’t until she added explosions, handcuffs, and the occasional donut-fueled stakeout that her voice truly found its wild, unmistakable rhythm.

When One for the Money was released in 1994, few expected the book to spark a phenomenon. But with Stephanie Plum—part amateur sleuth, part hot mess—Evanovich had created a heroine who felt as flawed and funny as your best friend. Readers didn’t just root for her to catch the bad guy—they wanted to hang out with her afterward and hear about the disaster over margaritas. The Plum series exploded from there, with each installment mixing crime, comedy, and offbeat characters like Grandma Mazur and Lula into a signature cocktail of controlled chaos.

At the heart of her writing is voice—irreverent, punchy, and unmistakably human. Whether juggling love interests (Team Morelli or Team Ranger?) or dodging exploding cars, her characters stumble through danger with grit and humor, never taking themselves too seriously. That balance—between suspense and screwball—has become her trademark, and it’s kept readers coming back through more than 30 Stephanie Plum novels, spin-offs, and standalone thrillers.

Evanovich’s books have landed on nearly every bestseller list imaginable, selling over 200 million copies worldwide. But she never lost her grounding. “I’m writing for entertainment,” she once said. “My job is to make people laugh in the dentist’s office.” And in a world full of hardboiled detectives and brooding sleuths, sometimes laughter is the most dangerous weapon of all.

From Trenton to Hollywood, from romance to heists, Janet Evanovich’s storytelling defies category—except perhaps one: utterly addictive.

Stephanie Plum

In a world of cold, calculating crime fiction, the Stephanie Plum series flips the script—with high heels, hot tempers, and hilariously high-stakes mayhem. Set in the unglamorous heart of Trenton, New Jersey, this long-running series follows an underqualified bounty hunter with a knack for catching criminals—and blowing up cars along the way.

What starts as a desperate gig to make rent quickly spirals into a career filled with bad guys who won’t stay caught, friends who can’t stay out of trouble, and love interests who are anything but simple. But this isn’t just a series about solving cases. It’s about surviving life one ridiculous mishap at a time. Each book dives into the absurdity of crime-solving with a heroine who’s as relatable as she is chaotic. Whether she’s wrangling skips, dodging mobsters, or getting unsolicited advice from Grandma Mazur (armed and ready), every chapter walks the line between laugh-out-loud humor and genuine suspense.

Blending mystery, romance, and slapstick, the tone stays light even when the stakes climb high. The atmosphere is fast-paced and unpredictable—like a sitcom crashed into a crime scene. Side characters like the fierce and fabulous Lula or the emotionally elusive Ranger help build a world that feels lived-in, weirdly lovable, and impossible to leave behind.

With each new entry, the series reinvents itself just enough to keep readers guessing, while staying true to its core: one woman, a mountain of problems, and the undeniable pull of a life she never meant to choose. Equal parts caper and comedy, Stephanie Plum is the perfect series for readers who like their mysteries spiked with laughter and just the right amount of danger.

This book was a lot of fun to read. I have already seen the movie several times so I had an idea of what was supposed to happen but reading the book definitely gives you more character background than the movie does. I am glad that I saw the movie first though because it was cast really well. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
