Red Sonja, the iconic, fiery, she-devil with a sword, is reinvented for a new generation of readers in this action-packed epic fantasy by legendary comic book writer Gail Simone.

The gutsy, wild, tortured free spirit, forged in pain yet unafraid of life or death, Red Sonja, the famous, fiery She-Devil and barbarian of Hyrkania has never concerned herself with the consequences of her actions. She’s taken what she wanted, from treasure to drink to the companionship of bedfellows. She’s fought who deserved it (and sometimes those who didn’t). And she’s never looked back.

But when rumors start bubbling up from her homeland—rumors of unknown horrors emerging from the ground and pulling their unsuspecting victims to their deaths—and a strange voice begins whispering to her in her sleep, she realizes she may have to return to the country that abandoned her. And finally do the only thing that has ever scared her: confront her past.

What Risingshadow readers think about this book

1/10

Red Sonja is a comics character initially created as a supporting character of Conan the Barbarian, taking inspiration from different Sword and Sorcery female characters developed by R. E. Howard (REH).  Red Sonja was very popular in comics in 70s and 80s, when most of the significant literature was produced.

This book is however a complete re-invention and keeps very little of the original Red Sonja and her REH placement, following a similar version of the character introduced by the same author in comics years ago (and now discontinued). This story attempts to re-write Red Sonja backstory and transforms the character in a cliché, featuring as a 'parody' of the original.

While this book feature a mediocre fantasy story with a female as protagonist, I cannot endorse it as a Red Sonja story to anyone who want to discover (or is a fan) of the authentic character. My opinion is that works like this are damaging Red Sonja, by altering the nature of the character without any rational reason.
