Shadow of The Dragons

The Portal Wars Saga is a measured epic fantasy that unfolds through discovery, restraint, and the dangerous return of long-suppressed magic. The story centers on Otto Shenk, a young wizard born into a noble household that sees his abilities as a liability rather than a gift. Isolated and underestimated, Otto’s life changes when he uncovers a forgotten tower once tied to the most powerful mages the world has ever known.

Otto is not a chosen hero swept along by fate. His rise is driven by study, preparation, and hard decisions, often made in isolation. As he learns to master ancient knowledge and lost magical disciplines, his personal struggle expands into something far larger. The reawakening of portals draws the attention of kingdoms, military powers, and rulers eager to control forces they barely understand. What begins as a quest for survival gradually pulls Otto into political maneuvering, large-scale conflict, and the responsibility of shaping a world that fears the return of wizardly power.

The series gives equal weight to internal growth and external consequence. Otto’s increasing influence forces others to react, allies form cautiously, enemies adapt, and entire nations shift their strategies. Magic functions as a disciplined craft rather than a shortcut, and every new advancement brings both opportunity and risk. Victory is rarely clean, and progress often demands sacrifice.

Written with a calm, deliberate tone characteristic of James E. Wisher’s approach to epic fantasy, the saga favors long character arcs, structured magic systems, and believable political tension. It speaks to readers who enjoy watching a capable protagonist grow through effort and foresight, while the wider world responds realistically to power that has returned after centuries of enforced silence.
