Alad, an ancient shedu, was born to protect Uruk and its king. But as Gilgamesh descends into a flurry of excess and violence, Alad wants freedom from both his destiny and his best friend. When he and Gil fight over a temple dancer, Gil gives him the space he desires by cursing him into stone.

Waking in Victorian London nearly 4500 years later, Alad immediately recognizes the woman whose caress freed him from the curse. But Charlotte isn’t Karu, the temple dancer with whom he was infatuated. They might look alike, but their personalities are very different. Plus, Charlotte gazes at him with heat in her eyes, heat he returns. Wanting her is second nature, but until he knows more about the terms of his curse, all he can do is keep the compelling woman close and hope he doesn’t destroy her life in the process of unraveling the past.

Charlotte, a paid companion, is greedy for adventure, even though it will mean her ruin. Besides, who wouldn’t want to spend time with the magical creature who shifts into four forms, all of them amazing? Yes, he’s a monster.
