Turns of Fate

Across the Fate River lies the Isle of Wyrd, a place where the supernatural is not hidden and humanity is certainly not in charge. The Arcana rule here, powerful paranormal beings whose bargains can alter a person's destiny, sometimes granting exactly what was requested and sometimes revealing the dangerous truth behind the request.

Anne Bishop's An Isle of Wyrd series blends dark fantasy, paranormal mystery, and crime fiction around Detective Beth Fahey, whose investigations draw her into the uneasy relationship between Wyrd and the human communities across the river. At Destiny Park, visitors may come seeking entertainment, a glimpse of the future, or an encounter with the uncanny. Others arrive wanting something badly enough to bargain for it, and every choice has consequences.

As Beth ventures deeper into Wyrd, impossible crimes become entangled with her own history and the strange laws governing the island. The dead have journeys of their own, predators can discover what it means to become prey, and seemingly ordinary human desires can send ripples through the supernatural world.

Dark, strange, and edged with Bishop's characteristic interest in the uneasy boundary between humans and powerful otherworldly beings, the series builds its mysteries around a deceptively simple idea: words have weight, intentions have consequences, and fate should never be treated casually.
