Itzel is your average assassin monk…except she’s been mostly booted from her order and she works as a planet-scouting biologist (a little at odds with the worship of a death goddess). When Itzel and the crew of the Calamity attend a gathering of the most powerful Families in the universe, she’s given one final job. She must kill Lucien Chandra, one of the leaders of the Chandra Family.

After a few assassination misfires, Itzel realizes that Lucien is far more than he seems. The Chandra councilman is kind, intelligent, and open to new experiences, even if that new experience is waking up with an assassin poised over his bed. She’s just starting to explore a world where she doesn’t follow the will of her goddess when everything at the Family Summit comes crashing down.

Each member of the crew of Calamity is thrown into crisis as a new, inexorable enemy is revealed. With no help in sight, Itzel and Lucien must fight not only for their own survival but for the future of charted space.
