Outlander-meets-The Princess Bride plus Camelot in a fresh, big-hearted, feminist, timeslip adventure reimagining the epic saga of King Arthur, as told from the perspective of his spunky and surprising queen, Vera – complete with time travel and good running shoes!

Vera always knew she didn’t fit in. When she learns that she is meant to be in another time, she leaps at the chance to embrace a new life in a world of valor, intrigue, and unexpected magic in this bold and romantic retelling of Arthurian legend . . .

22-year-old Vera is at a crossroads: waiting tables, grieving her previous relationship, and jogging aimlessly each morning as if toward an uncertain future. Then an odd man shows up at her workplace, insisting that she was once the legendary Queen Guinevere of Camelot, and that her lost memories hold the key to changing both the past and the present. Somehow, it all feels like the direction she’s been looking for. But when she asks the mysterious man to tell her more about Lancelot, Arthur, and a faithless queen, he can only say that much of what she’s heard about Camelot is wrong. The truth, he claims, is something she must see for herself.

After jumping through a portal in Glastonbury’s historic center, Vera is not prepared for what she finds. Magic is everywhere, but a curse on the kingdom means it dwindles every day. She has no idea how to perform a queen’s duties. Her fast friendship with Lancelot sets gossip flowing, and the stranger she must call “husband” often refuses to meet her eye. Arthur is a puzzle: cold, forbidding, and, while angry to her face, keeps leaving secret tokens of tenderness in her chambers. Worst of all, Vera’s memories—and the answers locked within them—show no signs of returning. If Vera is truly destined to save Camelot, she’ll have to trust her instincts. And her king will have to trust her . . .

Paula Lafferty

Paula Lafferty

Paula Lafferty writes with the instinct of someone who has always seen magic flickering at the edges of ordinary life. Her debut novel, La Vie de Guinevere, began as a dream shared with readers through a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign and grew into an international release, translated into multiple languages and narrated in audiobook form by Julia Whelan. The novel reimagines Arthurian legend with a feminist lens, weaving time-slip fantasy, romance, and myth into a story that feels both timeless and immediate.

Lafferty’s path to authorship reflects her layered background. She studied film production at Chapman University, where she learned the art of framing stories like moving pictures, and later earned a Master of Divinity at Saint Paul School of Theology, where she deepened her interest in meaning, ritual, and the unseen threads connecting human lives. That unusual pairing of cinematic structure and spiritual insight shapes her writing style, giving her work both vivid imagery and quiet resonance.

Now based near Kansas City, she balances family life with the writing desk, often accompanied by her dog Otto. Her stories reveal how grief, love, and courage can open doors into the extraordinary, and how even the most familiar myths can be told anew.

Though La Vie de Guinevere marked her debut, it arrived to strong critical praise, including a starred review from Kirkus, and an enthusiastic reception from readers who resonated with her vision of a queen reborn into a modern world. It is the beginning of a larger saga, with The Once and Future Queen scheduled for release in 2025 and sequels following in the years after.

For Paula Lafferty, storytelling is less about retelling old legends than rediscovering why they endure. Her fiction asks readers to step into the borderlands between past and present, myth and memory, and to carry a little of that wonder back into their own lives.

La Vie de Guinevere

Legends are not finished stories, they wait for the right moment to awaken again.

In this sweeping reimagining of Arthurian myth, a grieving woman in present-day Glastonbury discovers that her ordinary life is only a veil. When Merlin arrives with secrets she cannot ignore, she is drawn into the past, where the fading magic of Camelot calls her by another name: Guinevere.

The series moves between centuries, binding modern loss to ancient destiny, and explores how identity is shaped by memory, choice, and love that transcends time. Rich with historical texture and the shimmer of magical realism, it offers more than a retelling of familiar tales. It invites readers into a world where romance, betrayal, and courage carry new weight, and where a queen once bound by legend has the chance to write her own future.

Acclaimed for its immersive atmosphere and praised for bringing freshness to one of the oldest stories in Western myth, La Vie de Guinevere opens the door to a Camelot both recognizable and startlingly new. With sequels already on the horizon, this series continues to unfold the question at its heart: what does it mean to be remembered not just as legend, but as a woman who lived?

La Vie de Guinevere consists of one book and series is set to expand with the upcoming release of one more book. The current recommended reading order for the series is provided below.
