I’m used to being the odd man out. I’m the only monster at my station. I’m the only troll in my town, paranormal-friendly Pine Ridge. I’m the only troll in my family who lives among humans and other supernatural creatures. Does all of this absolutely make me the “grumpy loner”? Yes.

And don’t you dare try to change it. It’s comfortable. Predictable. If there’s one thing first responders like, it’s when there’s some peace and quiet. And if there’s one thing we know—it’s that whenever you think things are going smoothly, disaster strikes.

Not the composer—my cat, who should have been named Newton, because he wants to test the laws of gravity. What am I supposed to do? Call the fire department to rescue a cat stuck up a tree? How predictable.

But the huge, hunky firefighter who plucks my kitten out of the tree like he’s picking an apple doesn’t seem to mind, and making him cookies is the least I can do to say thank you, right? Especially since I’ve missed my cruise now, and I’m bored as heck in this quaint little town…

I don’t need this tiny human and her tinier fluffball of a cat in my life. I don’t need her cookies or her smiles. But it’s going to be a long, hot summer, and Andrea’s convinced this town has nothing worth staying for. Between the strangeness of the supernatural and our small size, it’s hard for Pine Ridge to keep teachers for long—unless they have a reason to stay.

It’s my duty as a public servant to make sure the children get a good education with a funny, talented, sweet teacher like Andrea. Showing her around won’t take up much time.

I just wish she’d stop taking up so much of my heart along with it…
