In frigid Wyoming lies a mystery that stretches back to Nazi Germany....

Lyle and Juan wait outside the lawyer’s house in ski masks, pistols hidden behind their backs. Shortly after dawn, Paul Parker, an aged lawyer, and his old dog step into the cold. The thugs kill the dog, and take the lawyer hostage. Parker’s day has started badly and is going to get much worse.

Once a fine lawyer, Parker’s enthusiasm has slipped with age, and criminals like Lyle are part of the reason for his disillusionment. Years after they last saw each other in court, Lyle is convinced that Parker owes him something. At gunpoint, Lyle and Juan make Parker lead them to the old Angler ranch, to open up a hidden library whose volumes hold the secret to forgotten riches, and the strangest war profiteering scheme to ever come out of the Great Plains.

C. J. Box

C. J. Box is an author whose stories feel as vast and untamed as the Wyoming landscapes that shape them. Born in Casper, Wyoming, Box grew up surrounded by the rugged beauty of the American West, a setting that would later become the heartbeat of his acclaimed novels. Before picking up the pen, he led a diverse life that saw him working as a ranch hand, fishing guide, and even a small-town reporter. Each of these experiences enriched his understanding of the land and its people, fueling his ability to craft authentic, atmospheric stories rooted in both place and character.

His breakout series, centered around Joe Pickett, a game warden navigating the complex, often dangerous world of Wyoming’s wilderness, immediately captivated readers with its blend of suspense, moral dilemmas, and a strong sense of place. The series has grown over the years, with each book diving deeper into the human condition, the environmental struggles of the West, and the fight for justice in an unforgiving landscape.

C. J. Box’s writing is a unique blend of grit and nuance. His characters are often caught between the harshness of the world around them and their own moral compasses, creating suspense that feels both immediate and timeless. Themes of isolation, resilience, and the stark realities of life in the modern West are woven seamlessly into his narratives, making his books as much about the environment and society as they are about crime and mystery.

With over a dozen novels to his name, including the Joe Pickett and Cassie Dewell series, Box’s work has earned him a loyal following and critical acclaim. His novels have sold millions of copies worldwide and have been translated into multiple languages. Notably, his novel Blue Heaven won the Edgar Award for Best Novel, cementing his place in the pantheon of contemporary crime writers. His books have also found a second life on television, where his gripping plots and unforgettable characters continue to captivate audiences.

Today, C. J. Box still calls Wyoming home, drawing inspiration from the same wilderness that shaped his early life. Whether in a quiet town or deep in the backcountry, his work remains a testament to his deep connection to the land and the people who call it home. For fans of taut, suspenseful thrillers, Box’s novels are a journey into the heart of the American West, where every shadow hides a story, and every path leads to unexpected truths.
