Drone Command

Troy Pearce #3
by Mike Maden
Drone Command (Troy Pearce #3) by Mike Maden
Unrated

Troy Pearce and his elite team of drone experts are called in when rising tensions between China and Japan threaten to dramatically change the geopolitical climate of the world.

When China stakes a dubious claim in the hotly disputed waters of the East China Sea, the prime minister of Japan threatens to dispatch the country’s naval assets and tear up its antiwar constitution unless the Americans forcefully intervene. The war-weary Americans are reluctant to confront the powerful Chinese navy directly, but if the Japanese provoke a military conflict with their historic enemy, treaty obligations would draw the United States into the fight.

In order to deescalate the first foreign policy crisis of his administration, U.S. president Lane dispatches Troy Pearce and his team to Tokyo to defuse the situation. What they find is a quagmire of hawkish politicians, nationalistic fervor, special interests with their own hidden agendas, and possibly the greatest military threat that America has ever faced. In this treacherous atmosphere it will require all of Pearce’s cunning—and his team’s technological prowess—to separate the truth from misdirection, and prevent the world from plunging into war.

Mike Maden

Mike Maden

Mike Maden's route into thriller fiction began far from the world of bestselling novels. Before writing about intelligence operations, autonomous weapons, and international conspiracies, he worked in the canneries, feed mills, and slaughterhouses of California's San Joaquin Valley. From there came graduate study in political science, years spent thinking about warfare and technology, a detour through politics and screenwriting, and eventually a novel he had originally considered publishing himself.

His fascination with military history and conflict led him to the University of California, Davis, where he earned a master's degree and a Ph.D. in political science, specializing in international relations and comparative politics. His academic interests included warfare, political violence, and the influence of technology on conflict. He later lectured and consulted on war and the Middle East, while another part of his career took him directly into American politics as a political consultant and campaign manager in state and national elections.

Maden also worked as a screenwriter, an experience that helped shape the visual, fast-moving approach he would later bring to his novels. Fiction writing, however, was not initially part of a carefully planned literary career. After friends challenged him to write a novel, he began working on what became Drone. He expected to publish the book himself as an ebook until literary agent David Hale Smith read the manuscript and offered to represent him.

Published in 2013, Drone introduced Troy Pearce, a former CIA officer operating a private company specializing in unmanned technology. The novel grew into a series with Blue Warrior, Drone Command, and Drone Threat. Its subject was particularly well matched to Maden's background. Rather than using drones merely as futuristic hardware, the books explore what happens when increasingly sophisticated weapons allow governments, intelligence agencies, private organizations, and individuals to exercise power in ways that traditional warfare once made impossible.

One of the writers who noticed Drone was Clive Cussler, who gave the debut novelist an enthusiastic endorsement. At the time it was simply an encouraging gesture from an established adventure writer to someone beginning his career. Years later, that connection would take on an unexpected significance.

Before entering Cussler's fictional world, Maden was invited into another famous thriller universe. Tom Clancy had been an influence since Maden encountered The Hunt for Red October while studying warfare and technology in graduate school. Beginning with Point of Contact in 2017, Maden became one of the writers entrusted with continuing Clancy's characters. The novel debuted at number three on the New York Times bestseller list and was followed by Line of Sight, Enemy Contact, and Firing Point, all centered on Jack Ryan Jr. and the covert intelligence organization known as the Campus.

Writing established characters required a different kind of discipline. Instead of inventing personalities and histories from scratch, Maden had to understand characters readers already knew and then place them in situations capable of revealing something new about them. That experience proved particularly valuable when he was later selected to continue Clive Cussler's Oregon Files.

Starting with Hellburner, Maden took command of Juan Cabrillo, the Corporation, and the Oregon, a disguised high-tech vessel whose crew operates in the dangerous territory between covert intelligence and international adventure. His subsequent Oregon novels, including Fire Strike, Ghost Soldier, and Quantum Tempest, have brought contemporary concerns such as drones, autonomous weapons, artificial intelligence, and rapidly evolving military technology into Cussler's tradition of maritime action and globe-spanning intrigue. For Maden, continuing the series also carries a personal connection to the author who had supported his first novel years earlier.

Technology remains one of the defining elements of his fiction, but the machines themselves are rarely the entire point. His techno-thrillers repeatedly return to the people and institutions controlling them. Who decides when a new weapon should be used? What happens when private technology outpaces government oversight? And how does an innovation intended to provide security become a threat when control of it changes hands?

Those questions connect the different stages of Mike Maden's writing career. From the Troy Pearce novels to Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan universe and the maritime adventures of the Oregon Files, his stories combine military technology, espionage, geopolitics, and action with an interest that reaches back to his academic work: technology can transform the way conflicts are fought, but the most consequential decisions are still made by people.
