About the Book
Keep the shop open. Host the town’s magic rock. Do NOT fall for the gargoyle in the stockroom.
Poppy Fairweather sells small magic at The Charmed Life: luck charms, bell charms, and a butterscotch dish that is only slightly lucky. Every dawn for nine years, she has chalked the same little charm on her shop’s doorstep. The town Council files her work under “novelty.” Everyone loves her little things. Nobody has ever asked for her best.
Above her door lives the town’s gargoyle. Grim has guarded Maplemoon Hollow for two hundred years, and for the last two, he's spent them creeping down her building one ledge at a time. In all that time, he has said exactly three words to the whole town. (The tavern framed them.) Nobody knows his real name. Nobody has ever asked.
Then the ancient stone that keeps the Hollow hidden from the outside world wakes six weeks early and latches onto the one working nobody takes seriously: Poppy’s doorstep charm. The Council’s emergency order arrives in triplicate. The stone moves into her stockroom. The gargoyle may not leave the stone. The stone may not leave the shop. The shop may not close.
Grim’s oath is simple: watch everything, want nothing. Nobody has touched him in two hundred years. Then Poppy grabs his arm to keep him from falling off her ladder, and the cold leaves him. Her handprint glows in his granite long after she lets go. Every night at nine she hands him a mug of tea he can’t drink. It used to go cold in nine minutes. Now it steams for hours.
But the stone grows hungrier by the day. A dryad auditor takes its temperature every morning; the readings keep climbing, and if the stone outgrows the spring rite, the wards fail for a year. Anyone on the county road could look up and see a demon in the bakery, a dragon at the flamehouse, and a gargoyle on Poppy’s roof. The only remedy in Grim’s ancient oath would cost him the one warm thing he's ever had.
The Council calls it an emergency. The stone has other plans. And in Maplemoon Hollow, the wards get a vote.
Stone-Cold Smitten for My Grumpy Gargoyle is a complete, standalone cozy small-town paranormal romance with a spell shop full of slightly lucky charms, a dryad auditor who keeps blooming on the job, a town that bets on everything and answers every emergency with casseroles, a sourdough starter serving as ring bearer, a grumpy gargoyle who has secretly fixed every roof in town for two hundred years, and a sunshine charm witch who asks her questions in numbered lists.
