Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Condition (The Murderbot Diaries #2) by Martha Wells

Artificial intelligence is a software system capable of performing tasks that would normally require human intelligence: learning, decision-making, problem-solving, and adapting to new situations. It is neither a biological nor a mechanical entity, but rather an entity built on algorithms and data. AI can exist as entirely immaterial software, but in literature and popular culture, it often takes the form of a character that works alongside or against humans. Through these characters, questions of consciousness, morality, and power are explored.

In literature, artificial intelligence has been a central theme since the mid-20th century, when the development of computers made the idea of an intelligent machine plausible. Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) introduced HAL 9000, a computer personality that controlled the spaceship and was capable of conversing with the crew. The character of HAL raised questions about the moral responsibility of artificial intelligence and its ability to make decisions on behalf of humans. William Gibson’s Neuromancer (1984), on the other hand, depicted virtual entities such as Neuromancer, which operated in a digital environment and controlled networks. Through these characters, literature began to explore the immateriality of artificial intelligence and its ability to influence the world without a physical body.
