Corum Jhaelen Irsei, timeless Prince of the Scarlet Robe, broods in his isolated castle, disturbed by strange dreams in which distant voices call his name, seeking help. At last he answers the call, and travels through aeons of time to the tragic land of the Tuha-na-Cremm Croich, a people persecuted by the terrible giant gods of the Cold Folk.

Only two weapons are powerful enough to overcome the Fhoi Myore and their loathsome monster allies, and these Corum must find: the magical, invincible spear Bryionak - now on the fatally beautiful island of Hy-Breasail - and the great, untamed Black Bull of Crinanass.
