The PsiScouts: X-Men meet Buck Rogers

In the 26th century, three psi-gifted teenagers find themselves on the same flight to Earth:

Gael Rimma of Wargal, code-named Bolt, controls electrical fields and can generate electrical charges. Confident and outgoing, Gael comes to Earth in search of her missing brother.

Royd Kar of Taarla, code-named Coulomb, controls magnetic fields and forces. Shy but affable, Royd is fleeing the desolation of his economically-depressed world, hoping to find a job through which he can support his family back home.

Iris Krall of Ceres, code-named Mentaxa, is a powerful telepath. Her cold, aloof exterior, a defense against the constant intrusion of others' thoughts, hides an inner insecurity.

Thrown together by chance, the kids use their remarkable abilities to foil an assassination attempt against Colleen Artveldt, the galaxy's richest person. In response, Artveldt announces that she wants them to be founding members of a new organization, a corps of similarly-talented youths to be called the PsiScouts.

This first title in the ongoing PsiScouts series has its roots not only in the legendary sf adventures of E. E. "Doc" Smith and Edmond Hamilton, but also in the tales of superheroes such as the X-Men and the Justice League. Yet author Phil Meade brings modern, cutting-edge sensibilities to his story, crafting a science-fiction adventure yarn for the modern age. Both teenagers and adults will delight in this first tale of the heroic PsiScouts.

Don Sakers

Don Sakers was launched the same month as Sputnik One, so it was perhaps inevitable that he should become a science fiction writer. A Navy brat by birth, he spent his childhood in such far-off lands as Japan, Scotland, Hawaii, and California. In California, rather like a latter-day Mowgli, he was raised by dogs.

As a writer and editor, he has explored the thoughts of sapient trees (The Leaves of October), brought ghosts to life (Carmen Miranda's Ghost is Haunting Space Station Three, Baen 1989), and beaten the "Cold Equations" scenario ("The Cold Solution," Analog 7/91, voted best short story of the year.)

Sakers is a member of the CoastLine SF Writers Group. He has taught sf-writing through Howard Community College.

In 2009, Don took up the position of book reviewer for Analog Science Ficiton & Fact, where he writes the "Reference Library" column in every issue.

In his day job, Don works for the Public Library.

Don lives at Meerkat Meade in suburban Baltimore with his spouse, costumer Thomas Atkinson.
