Acacia: The War with the Mein
An assassin sent from the frozen North on a mortal mission. A mighty empire under siege by its oldest enemy. Four royal children in exile or captivity, bent on avenging their father's death. Prepare yourself to be astonished and transported by Acacia.
Leodan Akaran, ruler of the Known World, has inherited generations of apparent peace and prosperity, won ages ago by his ancestors. A widower of high intelligence, he presides over an empire called Acacia, after the idyllic island from which he rules. He dotes on his four children and hides from them the dark realities of traffic in drugs and human lives on which their prosperity depends. He hopes that he might change this, but powerful forces stand in his way.
And then a deadly assassin sent from a race called the Mein, exiled long ago to an ice-locked stronghold in the frozen north, strikes at Leodan in the heart of Acacia while they unleash surprise attacks across the empire. On his deathbed, Leodan puts into play a plan to allow his children to escape, each to their separate destiny. And so his children begin a quest to avenge their father's death and restore the Acacian empire - this time on the basis of universal freedom.
Acacia is a thrilling work of literary imagination that creates an all-enveloping and mythic world that will carry readers away. It is a timeless tale of heroism and betrayal, of treachery and revenge, of primal wrongs and ultimate redemption. David Durham has reimagined the epic narrative for our time in a book that will surely mark his breakthrough to a wide audience.
"David Anthony Durham has won acclaim for his historical novels, and brings his knowledge of the past and other cultures to create a rich and compelling world on his first foray into fantasy. His skilful storytelling, depth of characterisation, and an ability to unsettle reader expectations is reminiscent of George R.R. Martin, but his is a distinctive new voice." - Lisa Tuttle, THE TIMES
"Durham brings to mind Tolkien with the expert detail with which he's built his alternate land. This could be the arrival of a fantasy classic." - SFX magazine
"He is a master of the fantasy epic... How will it all end? If the first volume of this projected series is any indication, in brilliant - and brutal - defiance of fantasy conventions." - WASHINGTON POST

Book Reviews
The cover text for Acacia: The War with Mein promised the regular fare, royals in distress, nation in peril, assassins and magic. Durham writes beautifully without being too ornate. He has written historical novels and Acacia feels like one too. The author builds up a complex and deep world with believable background. Description is this novels strength but also the weakness. The story flows through the landscapes and events and there are real gems, stunning pieces of narrative. But while there's plenty of that, dialog is scarce, leaving some characters rather flat. The story turned out to be more than the cover lead me to expect, well constructed and skillfully written fantasy novel, promising an interesting sequel.
