The Pan Book of Horror Stories ran for 30 volumes between 1959 and 1989, entertaining and terrifying thousands of readers in equal measure. In this tribute to the classic horror series, award-winning editor and historian Johnny Mains has commissioned new pieces from some of Pan’s most respected authors, printed here alongside selected stories from the original volumes. Originally launched in a limited hardback edition at the 2010 World Horror Convention in Brighton, in 2011 it won the Best Anthology prize at the British Fantasy Awards. Johnny Mains
Johnny Mains is a British Fantasy Award-winning editor and genre researcher. He was Project Editor on the 2010 re-issue of The Pan Book of Horror Stories, created the critically acclaimed series Dead Funny: Horror Stories by Comedians (co-edited with Robin Ince) and has spent the last five years deep in the archives, uncovering ‘lost’ stories by notable authors such as Edith Nesbit, Algernon Blackwood, Oscar Cook and Daphne Du Maurier, among others.
Pan Book of Horror Stories
The Pan Book of Horror Stories was a British paperback series of short horror story anthologies published by Pan Books Ltd. The series ran to thirty volumes, the first published in 1959.
Pan Book of Horror Stories consists of twenty-nine primary books, and includes two additional books that complement the series but are not considered mandatory reads — considered a complete series. The current recommended reading order for the series is provided below.
