On Chaco Rez, keeping the balance between life and death is sacred, and darkness never sleeps for long.

Years after her fight with Black Bear, Kai finds her familiar beat across the rez shadowed by a chilling pattern: Children are vanishing without a trace. Whispers echo through the canyons of a whistling man and his devil dog. Two ghosts that seem to travel through the shadows without leaving a trace.

Chaco is Kai's closest companion. A crow that can fly between worlds, whose job is to protect Kai, the bell that she wears, and the power it holds over the lands of the living and the dead. He's a timeless creature, with a memory to match, until something walks out of his past that forces him to confront feelings he’d thought he’d buried forever.

Meanwhile, the Walker's job never ceases. Escorting souls across the veil to the land of the dead stretches him thin. He can see into every soul alive, but even he can’t find the children that go missing one by one. It’s as if they’ve fallen out of time and into memory.

Kai, Chaco and the Walker must piece together a puzzle that stretches back generations, through some of the darkest days on the reservation, before time runs out and what’s lost can never return.

When the past and the present collide in the high desert, memories come alive. But so do nightmares.
