The second standalone romantic fantasy set in the world of the USA Today bestselling novel The Second Death of Locke.

A ruthless spy. A deadly mission. A thief who could ruin it all.

Nore Gordon is a woman of many talents: she can speak a variety of languages, disguise herself in plain sight, and has made a name for herself as a successful wine merchant. But unbeknownst to those closest to her, it is all a front for Nore's true role as the favoured spy of the Lindle crown.

Tasked with infiltrating enemy lands in search of a powerful relic, Nore is forced to engage the services of a great thief. Unfortunately, the only person for the job is her estranged husband Caspian. Both Nore and Caspian bear the scars of the disastrous end of their marriage, but if they are to survive their deadly new assignment, they must pose as a happily married couple to avoid detection.

As danger closes in, Nore finds herself tangled in a web of lies and deceit-and though Caspian is at the centre of it all, she may not hate him as much as she once did. But Caspian has betrayed her before, and trust can be far more deadly than deception.

V. L. Bovalino

V. L. Bovalino

V. L. Bovalino writes at the crossroads of myth, romance, and the uncanny, where every shadow might be hiding an old story waiting to be told. Readers first encountered her voice in young adult horror, where folklore and fear intertwined, before she turned toward epic fantasy with The Second Death of Locke, the opening of The Hand and the Heart series. In her work, love is inseparable from sacrifice, loyalty is tested at the sharpest edges of power, and magic is never without consequence.

Originally from Pittsburgh, she grew up with an ear for ghost stories and a fascination with the strange details tucked into history and folklore. That curiosity eventually carried her across the Atlantic, where she earned her doctorate in English and Creative Writing and made the UK her home. Alongside her writing, she teaches at Goldsmiths, University of London, guiding new voices in children’s and young adult literature.

Her novels and anthologies reveal a deep love of folklore and liminal spaces, whether through the haunting landscapes of My Throat an Open Grave or the collective unease of The Gathering Dark. Now, in her fantasy fiction written as V. L. Bovalino, she builds sweeping worlds lit by dangerous magic and anchored by characters who wrestle with duty, desire, and the cost of devotion.

Away from the page, she lives north of London with her partner and their loud cat, often surrounded by stacks of books and oversized sweaters. She remains drawn to the same things that shaped her earliest stories with unsettling myths, half-forgotten tales, and the mystery of how love endures when the world turns dark.

The Hand and the Heart

At the heart of this series lies Grey Flynn, a young woman bound to her mage by blood and magic, sworn to be his blade, healer, and shield. Her life is one of service and devotion, yet beneath that loyalty rests a secret so dangerous it could unravel the very foundation of their world. For Grey is no ordinary conduit of power, and if she falls, magic itself will wither with her.

The story moves beyond battlefield clashes and court intrigues into the intimate space where trust and betrayal blur. As Grey and Kier are pulled into a perilous quest to protect the child of a rival kingdom, every choice tests the limits of loyalty, love, and survival. Magic here is not just a weapon, but a fragile lifeline, a force that binds hearts as tightly as it binds kingdoms.

Darkly atmospheric and steeped in tension, the series draws readers into a gothic-inspired fantasy where sacrifice lingers behind every decision. It is a tale of hidden truths and haunting power, where the fate of magic itself rests on one woman’s ability to keep her secret, even from the person she loves most.
