Dreamfall

For the half-breed telepath Cat, being part human and part Hydran meant abandonment, loss, bare survival. Though fate turned his telepathy into freedom, his "gift" made him by turns an unwilling hero and an unwitting pawn. When he joins a research team on the planet Refuge, homeworld of his mother's people, the Hydrans, he finds more trouble just by helping a Hydran woman escape human pursuers.

The decimated Hydran population of Refuge is confined to a bleak "homeland." For Refuge has a unique natural resource, that the Tau Biotech corporate state would do anything to control: "Dreamfall," the tangible residue of cast-off thoughts from beautiful, enigmatic "cloud whales." Dreamfall forms vast reefs, sacred to the Hydrans, but mere data to Tau, which plunders them.

Cat is caught between Tau, which would kill to protect its huge profits, and desperate Hydrans fighting to reclaim their world. At stake are a love like none he's ever imagined, a heritage he's just discovered, and a power he may have lost forever.

To save them all - and himself - Cat must somehow forge the ruins of the past into a means to defeat Tau's brutality. Because now he's not a pawn or even bait. He's a target.
