Earl Dumarest find himself on the world called Folgone with a chance to win what most men can only dream of: vast wealth, unlimited power, and a beautiful heiress to be his wife. There is, of course, a catch. The wealth is confined to a feudal and restricted planet. The power brings with it the privilege of walking a tightrope between assassination and war. And the bride-to-be is a psychotic telepath.
Mercenary, galactic traveler, survivor, Dumarest’s dreams are not those of most men. He’s tired, and he wants to go home. But there on the edge of the universe, Dumarest’s goal seems impossible. For no one knows where his home world lies; very few are even willing to believe that Dumarest was born on a legendary planet called Earth.
